Open source is the superior model
Some people are surprised to learn that it wasn't that long ago when most drug research was, in effect, open source. University researchers could exchange data and cooperate to stretch a limited testing budget. With the increasing balkanization of plant and animal compounds, that's no longer the case and we're all poorer for it.

All the really interesting stuff in IT is happening in OSS. It's been that way for years. Vista and Office 2007 are two shining examples of why proprietary software can't keep up. Two products that are bloated, expensive and late to market. If it wasn't for the MSFT OEM protection racket they'd be falling even farther behind the rest of the software world.
