Sheez, and I thought it was going to be a pretty straightforward reductio ad absurdum -- but here you are debunking my examples as though the assertion I aim them at were valid.

OK, then, try this one: "If you can't afford to buy Oracle, you shouldn't be in business."

Naturally, you'll find a way to respond to that, thereby demonstrating that you've missed the point: The "If you can't x, you shouldn't y" syllogism just doesn't apply, here.

The most basic reason is the so-called Free Market, which Microsoft advocates (because, face it, it goes beyond mere utilitarianism to most of you) tend to lionize so greatly. Thing is, you love the idea of the free market when it can be used as cover for cut-throat, 800-lb gorilla competetive tactics, and you hate it when the idea is used to justify choosing anything other than Microsoft.

BTW, your retort to my "Jane" example was only semi-sound. It assumes the usual macho bulls**t "good kung fu" nonsense about coding skill, personal merit, and income. I can tell you from close observation over the past three years of a down-market that your assumptions are -- well, just plain wrong. Yes, she would probably bring in a minimum of $50-60/hr (more like $80 for J2EE, even around here), but she also probably hasn't worked in two months and needs to make rent. What's more, if this is a fixed-price job (quite common these days), she might not get paid for it for at least three months.
