Just another cost?

There are many "COSTS" associated with starting a business and getting a computer loaded with Windows is, most likely, one of them.

Why? What makes owning a copy of Windows a requirement for doing business? You might cite the regular stuff like document appearance, but those differences are likely to soon become niche differences. If one isn't going to use any Windows-specific tools, like those mentioned in the article, then why would one have to buy Windows? A small business owner shouldn't have to afford a Windows license simply because he or she wants to hang their shingle.

No one forces a startup to get a phone, fax copier etc, ya just do.

True, but that's a bad analogy. Better would be to say that you can only buy phones that have Windows installed on them, and you have to buy a separate software license. And in two years, you have to buy a replacement phone with newer software (because the software won't work on your old phone), at an additional cost.

Why go through all that if a regular phone will do the job for a lower investment and for a much longer period? I've been using the same phone at my (work) desk for three years, and I've been through three versions of Windows in the same time.

No one "FORCES" a startup to buy there Post-Its from 3M but you can bet thats were they are going to come from.

Actually, 3M does force you. If you want to use Post-It notes, you can only get them from 3M or one of their affiliates. But if you have no need for Post-It notes, you don't have to buy them. In the long run, a cork board and push pins could be less expensive.
