I agree with much of your post. I also advocate the use of Linux but not to the point of bashing Windows. Windows has served me well, but Linux and the lower cost of ownership serves me better now.

But the article focused on businesses that are, like mine, still reluctant to move away from Microsoft. We have several hundred workstations running versions of 2000- and XP-Pro, and our reliance on things Windows will likely keep us a Windows-based shop. Things like Exchange, Office (particularly Project and Visio), our IT department's overall acceptance of Windows and obvious lack of desire to deviate, and our bean counter's approval of the purchase orders, as well as filesystem ACL rules that appear to offer greater flexibility than *nix's offerings (there's more than RWX available in an NTFS, it seems).

At home, I use Linux almost exclusively, but I'm not a gamer so I don't see those shortcomings. I use Linux for my workstation, firewall and mail server, my family uses Windows (most of my child's games don't have Linux ports) because that's what serves them best. Everything I need to do when I telecommute can be done in Linux, including Office document editing. And everything I want to do (YMMV, of course) can be done as easily, many times more quickly or with fewer resources or less hardware demand than in Windows.
