The article is right, but
People are not going to change easily, especially to a lessor product. It's human nature.

Eventually they will have to change. Office 97, 2000, will be discontinued. And thus far, in limited tests, users are non-commital to brand of office suite - but not to appearance, speed rating of the PC, flat panel display.

Question for you - are all your users on WordPerfect, which I recall had the biggest installed base of any office product? No? Did they change (in this case, even converting the document base - a much bigger task). The funny thing is, those that are looking for an excuse to deny change seem to need to degrade the office worker to make their point.

Now you can tell someone that doesn't know any better that open office is a replacement for MS Offcie, but you won't convince me or anyone that knows the products.

Not sure what the point is of convincing you. It works, and that is what the user needs. If there is a lot of elegant coding under the hood, it is totally invisible to the user.

Now if you're going back to the bit about power users, yep, it makes sense to continue to give them the tool they work best with. The standards profile accounts for hundred of products, both in "move to" and "contain" categories, and moving different products to different categories is part of the job. "Hold the pickles, hold the lettuce. Special orders don't upset us."
