You still need a licence
Win4Lin is just an environment where you can install a copy of Windows (and last I heard you could only install Windows 9x products). Unlike wine, which is a Win32 API set that Linux can run. The advantage of Win4Lin over wine is that you can run way more applications in Win4Lin than you can using wine. The advantage of wine over Win4Lin is that wine is GPL and you do not need a Windows license.

The problem with running any Win32 program in Linux, no matter what method you may choose, is that almost anything that needs DirectX will not work. Meaning most Windows 3D games and applications need to be run in a native Windows environment. Now there is WineX, which is making the effort to make DirectX games run in Linux, but there are VERY few games that work without a hitch.

To tell the truth, I agree with what Loverock is saying, but not his reasons for saying it. I don't refuse to use Windows apps because I am prejudiced against Windows, I use the Linux equivalents because they run natively (and thus faster) and because they are either just as good as or better than their Windows counterparts. And the few apps that have no Linux counterparts, which are mostly specific game titles, can't run in Linux even using Win4Lin, WineX, or even VMWare. So for the 3 games that I like to play that only run in Windows, I keep a separate partition with Windows 98, with no network drivers installed to keep it off the internet.
