Here's a few other concerns....

What happens if this is allowed: will every server a message passes through be allowed to add their own "targetted" adverts? And if so, won't this actually become worse than spam?
Even if the above issue is avoided: how does one ensure the privacy of an email (sans encryption)? (And even that could start a flurry of "email encryption software" offers!) Such software could easily be used over time to "profile" an email user, just by looking at the server logs! (Oh, so I see "so & so" is into kinky leather outfits... his last 3 emails were tagged with 5 server added adverts for such. (Said like Arty Johnson of Laugh-in fame) "Very interestink!" (Imagine what could actually be gleaned from such & it is staggering!) I'm all for web security & new services & such: I'm a networking advisor myself & can see the benefits of such. But not without a great deal of consideration as to the possible consequences! My one teacher kept hammering it into us in class: Forthought can counter a great deal of hindsight! And it will cause fewer ulcers in the long run!
The bottom line is: I don't think the contents of an email (or letter, for that matter) is anyone's business, except the sender & recipient. I certainly don't want adverts inserted into the middle of a love letter! (or a poem!) I have fewer problems with adverts being shown, on-site, that were targetted by the subject line of emails; but don't mess with the original content of an email! It can create all kinds of havoc for the sender!
