Looking at Senator Figueroa
For a post further down I decided to take a look at the various pieces of legislation that the good senator is involved in. I noticed in the list that she personnaly is involved in + - 48 pieces of legislation. I noticed that there are at least 5 different areas ranging from internet privacy to dentistry to home inspectors to "Healthy Families Program", you get the picture. No one can convince me that she or any legislature is fluent in knowledge about each subject.

What happens is (1) special interest groups (2) someone with a new item to sell or (3) some constitutent contacts the legislator with some whiz bang idea or complaint and the process of legislation starts. Then the rest of the state, country or business gets hosed by some good idea that is supposed to do something "good". I am a free marketer by nature and have seen laws, while well intentioned, were obviously written to show that the legislator is "doing" something or just to get re-elected.

All too often these laws do more harm than good or puts mega-bucks into someone's hands. My best example is this reflective tape that you see on 18 wheelers. For years 18 wheelers have been required to have plastic reflective disks spaced over the trailer. Worked just fine. Some clown patented the red/white reflective tape that is now in use. He went to the fed dept of trans and convinced them to make a law that this tape MUST be used. At that time the tape cost about $100 a roll times the number of trucks on the roll this clown made a killing.

Same princible in the tech field (and most business). These legislators do not stop to think the harm that they create by legislating technology. There are some good but on the whole laws pertaining to how technology should or should not work is not condusive to good business or innovation. Most laws are written for the current cause celeb with no thought to the bigger picture.

I wish these legislators would just go fishing on my taxes and leave well enough alone. There are enough laws on the books, enforce those and quit micromanaging.
