The Problem is with Being Open About It ...
So, Google tells people that they are scanning email, and there is this nasty backlash.

But then, spyware companies and even commercial software products that play fast-and-loose with a network connection is acceptable ... so long as they don't mention it. Or certain product activation code / RFID tags that have the potential to track a hell of a lot more than email.

And projects that were once reported like Carnivore and Raptor, where the government is scanning traffic for "suspicious activity" is also acceptable ... so long as nobody mentions what it does.

Oh, please. Amd anybody that would put personal information into an email and not encrypt it is a fool anyways. People don't seem to understand that email is BY DESIGN plain text ... which means it's more like a postcard than a sealed envelope -- it is readable by many, many people.
