Just pitiful.
Just pitiful. Computer-illiterate senators trying to ban what they
don't understand. As was mentioned in the story, this would
practically destroy every email client out there. Without being
able to scan incoming data, no HTML formatting, image display,
or dynamic hyperlink creation could be implemented, as that
would require scanning the text of the message for key
formatting commands.

Senators like these have no idea what repercussions they will
create by trying to pass this legislation. Google's content-based
ad system is no different from the HTML formatting I mentioned
above, or bayesian spam filtering, both of which require a scan
of the content. If you really want to get anal about this, you
could argue that you couldn't even retrieve your messages,
because that would involve querying the database for your
messages. As I said above, just pitiful.

By the way, does anyone know where I can find a copy of this
bill?
