His preference is valid, without using OSX
As for what someone prefers, One does not have to use both to prefer one over the other as maybe a large part of their decission is based on the fact that he 'prefers an OS that can be run on machines from many different manufactures'. That is a preference, right: The abillity to choose your hardware vendor.?

Maybe he prefers to run certain games and Applications not available to OSX, so that could be a preference, too: the abililty to choose from a wide range of applications and games?

Maybe purchasing a computer and avoiding a vendor lockin is important: If this hardware stinks, my next machine comes from their competitor: that's a preference, right?

All valid points to shy away from an Apple computer, all based on preferences.
