Perhaps Gates doesn't see Linux users as being willing to pay $400 for an Office suite, so the size and growth of the platform doesn't really matter, if there's no money to be made in software sales.

It shows Gates investing in companies that are working to do directly opposite things to his own foundation. He's making money off of them while at the same time, they are destroying the very work he's doing. Shows that he's not afraid to make money off of anyone, no matter what they're doing.
