Fred We need to read the same text the same way
You correctly note that I said "does NOT require PC Makers...". Does not, of course denoting present tense. You also point out correctly that the events took place in the "mid-90s". We are talking nearly 10 years ago here. My reference was to the poster's myth that that is still the case. That is just a myth. Actually, the matter even in the mid-90s was more complex and represented an accounting benefit for OEMs who were willing parties to the whole matter, but that's another story. In any case your assertion that "effectively they still use all their resources to ensure OEM's ship Windows only." is not borne out by any evidence and clearly flies in the face of the number of OEMs offering Linux or other systems. But you are aware that those decisions today are economic decisions made entirely by OEMs.

I have no knowledge of why settlements have occured in many MS matters, neither does anyone else who is outside MS. But I certainly note that "integration" (the correct term) continues as a Windows development strategy and, I would guess the company must believe the settlement made that a legal reality. Why would they risk large fines, settlements and possibly software design decisions (a la Monti) if their legal arm didn't think it was at least sanctioned in settlement?

You are also aware that the Windows 98 Lite product (to which you allude) did not work like Windows 98. Many applications depending on IE technology malfunctioned and the product never caught on with any significant group for that and other reasons. You must also be aware that the court demonstration RESULT (emphasis mine) was not affected by the "screw up" in the installation process (two different machines), even Judge Jackson and the DOJ admitted that. But it was a mistake and apologies were issued.

Your assertion that integrating technologies into Windows, "..does not provide any benefit to consumers..." is your own opinion and you are entitled to it, but I strongly disagree and am entitled to do that.

The EU case is again about "integration" and it may yet receive final adjudication here, but software design by regulators is hardly a winning position.
