With 386 Distros...
With 386+ Distros of Linux, it's time a thinning out of things. The slow adoption rate of Linux is not only hampered by the inability to drive NEW hardware, but way to many Distros that confuse a potential and new Linux User. Compound that with failing Linux Distros on a frequent basis, and you have a recipe for slow adoption.

Linux needs to build confidence in both the Hardware Manufacturers and the potential User base. For get "Eye-Candy" and just make it work. I know so many people that do not want to go to Windows Vista but, are very nervous about going Linux for fear of their O.S. becoming an Orphan such as Fedora. - And it not allowing them to fully use their hardware.

Linux people don't get it! You really do need to charge for your product to stay in business! - And to gleen the required funds to create a package that will run current hardware. - Never-mind new hardware. I would gladly hand over the money I would spend on Windows Vista to a well supported, determined to last, and be on the top Linux O.S..

Right now, Ubuntu/Kubuntu, seem to be the happening Linux O.S. with partnered Support from Canonical. But!, how long will this last? This O.S. still has hardware compatibility issues with a simple 8x nVidia GForce 4 Ti4200 AGP Video Card. No Open GL support and no 3-D Acceleration is provided. The card is useless in Linux but, a decent card in Windows. I can't even run Open GL Screen Savers!!

When you use the drivers from the Download Repository, you get no video on reboot. If you did not copy the warning message and Command Line undo command, you're hosed!!! Re-Install time!!! Makes one very hesitant to try the drivers from nVidia since the O.S. support of the Linux nVidia drivers from nVidia don't inspire confidence either. So no-go there. I'll wait for Ubuntu/Kubuntu to let me know I can do it. The Linux HCL for the afore mentioned Distros shows no support for new cards since Manufacturers are skeptical about Linux as the User base that might switch now! Linux people, this is the time to seize the moment! - Don't blow it!

Video cards are not the only thing that Linux can't handle either. Printers as new as a Canon iPax 4000. You can't duplex print on both sides of a page because the drivers don't work as well as the Windows drivers. Gutenprint is really great but, will not allow you to set duplex printing. Least-wise so it will remember the choice! - So it will work.

And so the story goes... If Linux can't support 6 to 12 month old hardware, why should the Hardware Manufacturers through support to Linux? Fedora is your future if you don't smarten up and seize the moment!!!!! Double your cycle time to give the Coding Guys time to work things out. A new release every 6 months is nuts!!!
