What does RedHat have to lose?
Given the choice of using RHEL or a RHEL clone I would chose the former over the latter. IMO requiring the purchase of support in order to obtain the binaries is essentially licensing the software. Yes it's a legal difference but the end result is the same. If I were a contributor to Linux I would be offended that RedHat packages my contribution and then "sells" it under the guise of support. Sun offers Solaris free to anyone who wants it. Those that want support buy support. No requirement to purchase support to obtain Solaris. I see no reason why RedHat cannot do the same. Likewise RedHat's visibility would grow as more people use it. AS it is, due to the cost, most people opt for some other distribution.
