A better distro would be SUSE or Ubuntu. Ubuntu is the best for lightweight install and supports rare hardware. It also performs pretty well if you get BUM to turn off unneeded services. As for fdisk, I found a utility from Hungary that is called Aefdisk that wipes any hard drive to virgin status so you can start over. Any OS and boot partition is wiped as if it came from the factory.
