Does it really make a difference
whether hobbyists use a free RHEL or a free RHEL-clone? Either way these people are not paying for support, which ultimately is why RH wants people to give them money. The only difference between the two are the branding. And bragging about market share based on free downloads won't do RH any good on their bottom line. At least now when you see a stat for RHEL you know it's a paying customer, and when you see a stat for CentOS you know it's a free download.

And while I agree that Fedora has its issues, I think most are due to the fact that RH has no interest in the desktop market, and has said so on several occasions. I think that's a mistake, especially when you consider that Windows Servers for the most part run like a desktop, and that if you want to run a virtual Windows Server in VMWare you need to run a desktop in Linux whenever you need to do something in Windows (other than routine maintenance).

While I respect Red Hat in most respects, I think they hem themselves in, in far too many ways. The strict free source policy, while community-friendly, is not always business-friendly. And their server-only agenda adversely affects their user interface (your VMWare example demonstrates both of these problems). I accept RH for what they are, but with their current strategies they aren't going to turn into a software giant, if that is their agenda.
