You bore us all with your grossly inaccurate blanket statements. If you had any idea what's going on in the OS world you'd embarrass yourself with these kinds of statements.
And for the record, I use Redhat and Windows Server daily. BOTH have their strengths and both have their problems. A "hard reboot" won't destroy the filesystem. It may corrupt some files, but the filesystem will check for and rebuild errors from corrupted files during the reboot process.
Of course anyone who's spent some time with linux would have probably just pulled up the process monitor and killed the up2date process to solve the "lock up," thereby avoiding any filesystem or application issues. By the way, that functionality is also possible in Windows via the Task Manager - but I'm sure probably already knew that.
