microsoft imitates FOSS
Which came first:

PHP or Microsoft ASP? Answer: PHP, by two years.

Which came first:

Apache or Microsoft ISS? Answer: Apache

Which came first:

Zope or Sharepoint? Zope, by two years.


Which had overlapping windows first:

X11 or Windows? X11.

Which had an XML based GUI building language?

FOSS or Windows? I think you know the answer by now: XUL and Glade are here now. XAML isn't due until Longhorn.

How about a network transparent windowing system?

Microsoft will someday have theirs in Longhorn. We have ours in X11 with FOSS extensions and we've had them for years.

Microsoft has been forever imitating and borrowing from FOSS innovations. At this point, I say, it's payback time and FOSS can, and should, borrow from them without shame. Turnabout is, afterall, fair play.

Of course that FOSS continues to innovate, truly innovate and invent, is paramount. And if a proprietary company, like Novell or IBM, wants to help us do it? So be it!
