"As things stand, creativity has gone, and that's one reason that Linux on the desktop makes sense. It'll be good for Microsoft, too. They won't like it, but it will force them to innovate," he added.
Second:
According to Linux distributor SuSE Linux, now a division of Novell, one key factor in boosting the adoption rate of open-source software is to eliminate obvious differences with Windows and to emulate Microsoft's operating system where appropriate.

Both comments from Novell representatives.
Anybody else see the contradiction?

And don't say it's about innovation in apps. For one thing what is Open Office attempting to imitate? For another, the world already has Windows on which to innovate. What's the advantage of an alternative?

No, if Linux is someday to have an impact on Windows, it will be as a limited, cheap alternative. The more Microsoft adds to its products, the more it creates a niche for a cheap product that doesn't do much, but enough to satisfy some minimal, clearly defined, and unevolving needs.
Ironically, Microsoft's innovative approach of adding capabilities to its products is what creates room for Linux.

Until then, it can just keep on fulfilling its main purpose: killing proprietary Unixes while giving IBM an edge in getting service contracts.
