What an incredibly poor analogy. In fact it works more against you than for you. The wheels, tires, lugnuts, etc are separate, NOT integrated, parts of the truck. This is just an amazingly poorly thought out argument.

Choice is the point you're making (whether you realize it or not). Software should work together, and can work together easier in an open source construct than in MS's proprietary format. All applications developers (not just MS's internal developers) have access to open source (like Open Office) api's and can write email or other applications that interact nicely. If MS bolts email into either their office suite or the OS, how are alternatives going to compete?

Competition is good. Choice is good. Choice only happens with competition.
