Not all feel that way.
The point being it is very aggravating trying to open items that are not of the same format or wasting time trying to covert to certain formats like [mime] ect...

You don't understand what I am trying to say here, software should work together, not be in a jig saw puzzle of items that 'might' work together.

I understand what you are saying. And its completely valid. But IMO, I would hate it if Open Source went that direction.

I love the fact that I can pick and choose what suits me best. If I don't like a certain part of my working environment, I can take it completely out and replace it with a better alternative. Its that modular approach that gives a Linux distor so much of its appeal for me. I can tailor to my precise setup all the way to the heart of the OS.

Also, for gentoo, its easier to (un)install all these pieces than to go out, buy the latest Office, and install it on Windows. I will admit that gentoo is much harder to install that XP in the first place, but it was more than worth it.

And for working together, MS Office would be the worst example. I have seen many instances where newer Offices won't open old ones correctly. Its from the same company... and it doesn't work while giving you the impression it will, not might? On the other hand, open source apps are completely different entities, but are able to work together VERY well because of their open source nature. There are no hidden API's and closed formats.

Of course some will want it differently, and they have every right to choose otherwise. But overall, I don't think this is a fault of OSS, rather an advantage and a plus.
