Linux works now
I have Suse 9 on one of my computers and I do not notice the problems you describe. In fact, it is easy to use. As far as applications go, if one cannot be found that is written specifically for Linux, I can hunt among the 1000s of windows applications until I find one that works with the wine emulator.
