The thing about the open source phenomenon is the pace of innovation. A prime example is Mozilla, where it is even hard to keep up with as a user. You no sooner learn how to exploit some feature than the next version is out, with new stuff you hadn't thought of. There was a piece in one of the journals recently about a grant given by, I think NSF, to a research team at UC Irvine to study the phenomenon - what is it about open source, it it across the board, or do some areas of technology adopt better than others, etc.

Point being, if you find an open source product lacking in some vital characteristic, wait around a moment. I guess the speaker's other point is that the pressure being felt will force some proprietary vendors to innovate in return, rather than just talking about it.
