One standard is one format

And ODF file format is that format. If a file was different than the standard, it will not write to it and break from it. This idea is so that all software vendors could open, write and save to it, regardless of the vendors that agreed to the ODF format.

Unfortunately, older file formats that are proprietory will not be able to be opened by the open format programs. I have tried with OO and failed on some. Those files have to be exported out of their programs in a format that future programs can read. Doesn't matter if open or closed. Just so long as the file can be manipulated. Life is burdensome at times, get used to it.

That is baloney. You still have the original program to export it to a readable format by another program. Actually an orphan is created by hardware that is unavailable to read that obsolete disk. Open standards are overrated.

It doesn't matter what Europe decides. There is lots of data in proprietory format that ODF standards are too late. Fortunately most of it is in WP51 format that is easily transferable. I think I might go into this business of updating older formats since a lot of folks thinks it's burdensome.
