I think you are confused on the purpose of the goal.
You do not need a SATA drive on a DOS machine to retrieve data. Just make sure all the data on your floppies is saved to that IDE drive so you can insert it in your modern machine to copy over to the modern drive. You can snap an old 80mb Seagate on one of your channels just fine for I have done it.

FreeDOS isn't necessary to retrieve data. PC-DOS is free also and works better. I have that in stock also.

Do not need a long term strategy to rescue old data. Once it is transferred to the drive, that 5-1/4" is no longer needed. I am done with it. I think you are silly planning a long term strategy on a one time deal.

The whole purpose is to rescue data off old floppies if you can and put it on a modern machine. A brand new XP machine will fireup on MS-DOS. Most DOS programs ran in 640x480 mode so drivers aren't a issue. Then you convert the data to the new format. Once done, you will not need DOS again.
