Wow, such diligence!
"I have 4 of them in parts wrapped in plastic."

Are each machine's parts kept in a separate nuclear bunker, with the bunkers scattered all over the globe? I'm just wondering how far your diligence has taken you... wink

"I can use MS-DOS because I licensed it back in 1994."

Yes, but I was already assuming that FreeDOS would be a suitable replacement. Besides, you are more likely to get new drivers written for FreeDOS, e.g. for PCI SATA cards for your 200MHz MMX machine, if ever IDE drives become hard to find. Assuming that PCI doesn't disappear either. Or PCI 2.2+ becoming mandatory, with your PC stuck on PCI 2.1...

"I think a good business would be to get data off of old equipment and import it to current formats on standard hardware."

Well yes, but the thing about "history" is that there's more of it every day happy ! The ever-increasing burden of your strategy is part of the problem of the digital black hole. (Assuming that format conversion tools even exist.)

And no, I'm not claiming to have all the answers either. But I will be trying the "open format" approach because I literally cannot afford to stockpile hardware indefinitely as you are suggesting.

I think you are confused on the purpose of the goal.  osreinstall | 12/18/06
No, just looking at a broader picture.  Zogg | 12/19/06
Doesn't matter once the data is retrieved.  osreinstall | 12/19/06
Nobody *ever* suggested "one format forever" (except you, that is)  Zogg | 12/19/06
One standard is one format  osreinstall | 12/19/06
Don't be absurd, of course standards are allowed to change.  Zogg | 12/19/06
Not the vibes I got from OSS.  osreinstall | 12/19/06

Kaffiene will become Cross Platform next year  deaf_e_kate | 12/17/06
Maybe if Novell is involved.  osreinstall | 12/17/06
Novell will have nothing to do with Kaffiene  deaf_e_kate | 12/17/06
That is too bad.  osreinstall | 12/17/06

Back to my question about...  Cardinal_Bill | 12/17/06
Ever hear about research.  osreinstall | 12/17/06
Have you tested that old CD-R recently?  Zogg | 12/18/06
Can't be too bad. They all work.  osreinstall | 12/18/06
Huh? I'm talking about real discs, not web articles!???!  Zogg | 12/18/06

I was using it on a 2x scsi burner  osreinstall | 12/18/06
No, that's not it.  Zogg | 12/18/06
That sounds more like it  osreinstall | 12/18/06
Ridiculous! Of course standards are important!  Zogg | 12/19/06
Naw, standards change making this moot anyway.  osreinstall | 12/19/06
You do not understand what "standards" mean.  Zogg | 12/19/06
