European Model?

Why is it that education is one of the few areas that cultural snobs don't want to compare the U.S. model to the European model?

If you want to improve education in the U.S., look to Europe's model of competitive education in the primary and secondary markets.

Monopolies tend to produce inferior products, whether it is the U.S. phone company of the 70's or U.S. primary and secondary schools. Colleges can't expect to make up for 12 years of neglect in 4 years.

Members of our community tried to get a charter school that would be responsive to the parents (customers). The teacher's union fought them tooth and nail -- and then got bit by the monopoly that they help sustain when the teach contract negotiation came around.

If you want better college graduates, get better primary and secondary education.

If you want better primary and secondary education, break the public school monopoly. This will help out the [good] teachers, the parents, the students, and the colleges.
