This is an RPM problem.
The whole reason I left RedHat at 8.0. I didn't like the fact that I was confined to the RPM's that RedHat supported (it was big, but not cutting edge). Sure I could use outside RPMs, but they usually were poorly made and the deps really pissed me off.

So I switched to Suse... more or less the same, then to FreeBSD (great, but got annoyed). Now (for a year), I use Gentoo. Its not perfect tho. Its a lot harder to set up then RedHat or Suse, but easier than BSD and once its up... I have yet to see another distro compare. Not even BSD's apt-get system beats it (IMO).

I think I had a 90% install success rate. The other 10% is my lack of skills in tailoring the config files to my liking (who wants default!) or some minor errors that took at most 10-15 min to clear up on the forums.

Unfortunately, install time is VERY long as you are compiling from source. But I see that as an advantage. Plus, there are ways to lessen the pain, you can always easily create your own binaries of multiple packages like KDE and Gnome and install all at once, quickly.

That applies to RedHat too, try to use SRPMs instead, as they will sort things better in the dep tree and leave you with less junk copies of the same program.
