Single Code base
I recently abandoned the notion of a Single Code base. The reason is that 70 percent of the code used is legacy code. The sad fact for those of us who dreamed of a Single Code Base is that Virtualization gave new life to that legacy code. It is now possible to (with VMware) take an old DOS program and turn it into what is very close to a Web Service. PHP, PERL, AI languages like PROLOG and LISP, FORTRAN and even COBOL all have there places. If you add in things like SQL, PL-SQL, JCL and the like and think more like newage mainframes rather than personal computers then single code base starts falling appart.

Even the notion of a single database management system has been dropped. Studies have shown that it is a rair shop that has only one. We all are using MySQL, SQL Server, DB-2, Oracle, Borland Database engine etc and that is owing to legacy code.
