Depends on your needs...
I lived for a lot of years without using any virtualization. Now I can't live without it. At any one time, I have at least one vm up on my workstation, sometimes two or three depending on what I'm doing. I know that virtualization isn't appreciated enough by software developers. I was one of those who just didn't understand how it could help me do my job more efficiently. It took a while for everything to sink in, and now I don't think I'd ever want to go back to the "old way" of doing things. Between making the switch to dual monitors and making use of virtualization, my productivity increased somewhere around 20%. And I was pretty productive to begin with...
