Will all the software than can read Microsoft formats...
... including a large amount of software not produced by Microsoft disappear in the foreseeable future?

If the software remains available, it'll be easy to "open the documents we created in the past, whether near or distant."

If the less widely availabale - and less used - software which can read ODF natively doesn't survbive, it will still be possible to write a reader. Of course, the same can be said for Microsoft Open XML formats.

That justification appears inherently weak, so obviously flawed that I wonder whether everyone who uses it is sincere.

Microsoft Office can be beaten. And like Windows, it can and would I think in the past have been beaten by more user- friendly software which works more quickly and easily, with well-selcted features.

The contest should be about software, and the solfware should be sold like any profitable product. Any illegal practices by Microsoft should be corrected by regulators, but that should be aside from the real competition and not the main strategy.
