If MS Office 2007 can open (and save?) ODF as well as its native MSXML

... then that's a Very Good Thing. It's exactly what a lot of people (PJ included) have been asking for for several years now.

and OpenOffice (via Novell) can open (and save?) MSXML as well as its native ODF

"Able to" and "legally able to" aren't the same. If Novell inserts Microsoft-patented code into OpenOffice.org such that you can only use it if you buy it from Novell, a lot of people's work goes up in smoke -- they can't even use the product that they themselves worked on.

does it really matter which is "ratified" as a standard (providing it's all about interoperability and not simply snot-nosed politics)?

If I need to get a license from Microsoft to access my own data, then "interoperability" has been redefined, no?
