that MS will do anything out of good will and open-heart .....

I really doubt it, MS will do all in its power top sink anything that stand it its way. ( laws should be there to protect alternative ways)

as far as Pamela Jones or slashdot we need those voice to balance the debate since the big cannon can find way to shut-down any opposition. stuff like groklaw and slashdot are a blessing.....

When you can compare source you can judge by yourself what is right or wrong.
Without those extremist pole we could not judge by ourself the exactitude of a info/new/comment, if you don't have multiple source of information you are stuck with the big gun guide lines. Which is worst in my opinion nothing is worst that the main stream info. Most the time they follow guide line from big gun and spread fud and other stupidity.
