The other viewpoint is this...

I'm not standing up for Microsoft by any means. I work in an all-OSS shop and am proud of it.

The only innovation Microsoft has done is that they have brought innovations that other companies have made (ie. Sun, as you mentioned) to the general public, instead of the smaller markets. Granted, the only reason they're able to do this is the huge install base, but the end consumer--who may or may not have seen the original product by the original manufacturer--will see the feature(s) and think of it as innovation. As long as MS keeps spouting it, the sheep...err, consumer...will believe it.

BTW, ZDNet, Web 2.0 doesn't look good on you. And get rid of all the ads. It's been annoying in the past, but now they're half the content area. Put them at the bottom or make them much smaller.
