that a first stop. So many people bemoan their current computer, maybe they need to rent or borrow another system and decide if they are suited for the platform they use and what they want to use it for. It might cut down on the bashing done by the inexperienced but bitter.
Then consider that any software that goes through upgrade doesn't necessarily mean you need to upgrade. What's the life cycle of the product as detailed on the vendor's website. Does Sun's, Windows', Apple's, Linux's product support life cycle seem long enough (too long) for you and your needs. You may not know right now. Six years from now, Solaris 10 or Windows XP, or Fedora Core 3 may do all that you want, restrict you less than its future versions, or run that application you can't get to run in a later release. DO you need to get on the upgrade treadmill. If their isn't a specific hardware dongle or gotcha to force it, why necessarily do it?
Don't let others bully you into switching. Find out the pros and cons of the vendors. You don't let these people force you to buy the car of their choice, you buy the one you want or can afford or at least thought out? Same of your OS. Zdnet or its posters most likely will not show up at your house to help you post decision if you have issues. And would you really want any of the posters showing up at your doorstep in the first place?
