- That is wrong!
- At least with Red Hat's Fedora, you NEVER have to repartition your hard drive. there is no loss of data during an upgrade, or even a new install unless you TELL the setup program to reformat your drive. I both updated, and installed, a new version without losing any data. If Ubuntu does reformat your hard drive without asking, then you need to find a better distro to use.
