Why do you care? You can buy bare bones hardware today
You can buy barebones hardware today - why would you care that other hardware is sold as a package complete with O/S and more? I don't see Apple agreeing to this concept anytime soon.

And, name a car company that makes its own stereos and doesn't buy them from AC/Delco or another company.
