I'm not sure why they had to layoff people
I mean since doesn't OSS mean Other Sustainable Salary:)

If people are willing to volunteer their time to write software then why would they be laid off? It's kinda like Kramer on Seinfeld being let go from a job that he wasn't being paid for in the first place...the reason...his volunteer work was causing more issues than it was solving.

This is the fundamental issue with OSS, unless the licenses are changed to receive revenue from companies that modify distribution in order to make $$$ then OSS will break into quasi-proprietary properties and fragment the very foundation it was meant to build upon.

Just look at all the failed automobile manufacturers in the early part of the last century. Everyone wanted to produce their own product because "their" product was the best. They failed to realize that seperating rather than consolidating led to their demise.

Open-source software will find that having many offerings will become a larger problem the more it proliferates and will fail due to its success. Being an ego-driven offering, OSS will continue to fragment itself because their are no shareholders to answer to, and thus no real accountability.
