A lot of the people who are here now, grizzling on about how sad this is and how it will hurt software innovation are the same ones who were lambasting "European Commie sympathisers" for marching in the streets in protest at the idea of... Software patents! Are software patents good or bad? Who cares! Someone's been eating Microsoft's porridge and that is a Bad Thing.

Do they read the stories? No, of course they don't! Do they ever attempt to assimilate what they have read and think "can I apply this new-found knowledge to gain a wider appreciation of the world"? No, of course they don't! They just jump up and down and cheer whichever side their mates told them to.

Sometimes I hope that they'll accidentally read one of those stories which manages to _simultaneously_ contradict two of the basic assumptions which constitute their narrow, "goodies and baddies"/"Americans vs. Foreign scum" view of the world, and their heads will simply explode, trying to cope with it (kind of like the way people in science fiction stories could always cause the conputer to crash and the city to start exploding just by asking it "why").

"IBM makes chips for Microsoft? IBM make chips for Micro...? MUST HATE IBM! MUST BUY X-BOX! MUST LOVE MICROSOFT! MUST HATE IBM!" >bang!<

You get the picture?

Who needs logic when you can have ridgid, unswerving loyallty?
