IE doesn't do anything that most other browsers don't do. Eolas have chosen to sue MS because they have money - none of the other browser companies is worth suing.

The issue is whether it is reasonable to get a patent, then quietly sit on it for many years without defending it whilst a large slab of IT becomes dependent on it. Browser plugins were first introduced by Netscape, not Microsoft. Why didn't Eolas approach Netscape then? Why wait nearly 10 years to enforce a patent that they saw in daily use by a huge variety of software?

Products such as Macromedia's Flash are also caught in this, I suspect if Eolas prevails over MS, they will approach as many other encroaching technologies as they can. No one will argue, since if Eolas can beat MS, they can beat anybody.
