Old IT mantra...
Never be the first person on the block to run 1.0 software. This is what's known as business common sense. Let other companies with huge IT budgets work through the bugs and the incompatibilities. I look at the IT world through the eyes of someone who has worked in the manufacturing sector for a long, long time. Manufacturing tends to spend anywhere from 0.5% to 3% of their annual revenue on IT. This is not a big chunk. If you were to look at the manufacturing companies making up the bulk of the industry...$1M - $500M in annual revenues...you'll find on average an IT department of between 1 and 5 people. They don't have the time or resources to work through new OS issues. They barely have time to make sure their existing infrastructure is stable, and stable is often an overstatement.

Anyway, the whole point to that rant was that yes, you can tell companies to stay away from Vista until SP1 or SP2. In fact, in many cases you'd be performing a disservice by telling them anything else. Upgrading for coolness factors is what gets IT managers fired. If there is no clear business need to upgrade, you just don't do it. Period. End of story.
