Vista should be deployed virtually on top of Linux
If you read what Microsoft is telling developers, it is that the main reason for Vista is security. Unfortunately for the product is the fact that security is adressed on the new multi-core multi-processor PCs and on even greater muli-processor multi-core servers in hardware and through hypervisors/ virtualization. So unless you are going to stick with hardware that isn't even going to be manufactured anymore, there is no security advantage. In addition, you should still deploy Vista virtually on top of Linux because of voice technology.

Again if you read what Microsoft is saying to developers on its web site, one of the reasons for Vista is voice control and voice technology. Forget the fact that voice control has been provided by Dragon Dictate and similar products for years and also forget the fact that multi-processor multicore hardware better supports all things natural language processing because of real threading. Oh also forget the fact that AT&T developed Unix and hence most software voice related is Unix flavored.

Linus Geek is correct - the customers Ballmer refers to are really Microsoft partners who are anxious to deploy at shops other than their own. Those other shops however will find the Novell/Microsoft marriage compelling reasons to run Linux. I do recommend that Microsoft partner companies get on the Novell/Microsoft marriage band wagon. Mike Cox, Loverock & NoAx - it is your salvation. You are about to spend money are you not? I mean Microsoft isn't giving Vista to you right? Make certain you at least get the Novell technology Microsoft will be paying for and distributing to 350,000. I suspect those that ask will get - no or marginal additional charge.
