Huzzah - Why is Management so Clueless; November 2 2006 Novell/Microsoft
Ray Ozzie and the ligitimate managment at Microsoft still have not gotten the word out. Most Microsoft only shops now have Open Office through the Novell/Microsoft marriage of November 2 2006. (the day hell froze over.)

Microsoft is paying Novell to supply Open Office as well as SuSe Linux to its customers. I have assumed the major beneficiaries of this deal are the shops that bought the full Microsoft meal deal.

Lets put this article into statements even the mental manipulator legals can understand.

Owing to legal strategy, the current criminally-minded Microsoft managers prefer (because it protects them personally), Microsoft refuses to pay for patents stollen from Universities and private firms in spite of multiple courts telling them to and inspite of taking one such case all the way to the Supreme Court of the US where the case was refused because common sense says Microsoft should pay the paultry sum courts came up with for the theft (it involved Excel and Access).

Now lets add in the patents and copyrights that US tax payors paid for that involve Information Technology. Specifically UC Berkeley related and specifically Adobe Related.

US tax payers paid for free Adobe readers. Adobe has to provide this by virtue of the initial government funding. But EU tax payers have no rights to those readers. In fact, I believe Adobe from day one intended to sell those readers out of country based on the proof of concept demonstrated in the US.

Hence Microsoft either needs to pay Adobe for each copy of the Adobe reader it distributes out of country or come up with a new document standard and its own reader. See the legal strategy?

Microsoft management no longer can steal the code for those readers. Adobe has grown strong enough to prevent that. But rather and doing what is common sense (IE paying Adobe for each copy distributed out of country), Microsoft bundles in a new document standard with a new reader. Now, take the UC Berkelely patent theft involving the way a browser handles active x controls and applets.

Microsoft management no longer can steal that code. UC Berkeley took Microsoft to multiple courts and won ever time. As a legal strategy that protects really only current and former managers and officers at Microsoft who allowed the theft to take place, the remaining criminally minded in charge remove the UCB code from Internet Explorer and steal that code back from consumers of Internet Explorer by means of an automatic Windows update.

The stealing back is why Microsoft must now provied registry settings that prevent automatic updates of future Internet Explorer browsers. At least one state government (Washington State) discovered that the new IE browser takes code needed for Department of Personnel (I assume SAP) browser based software to work. Microsoft did that (I believe) with the UCB code or other code involving a patent or copyright not now included in its latest browser. (Washington State BTW, has yet to allow IE browser 7 to be deployed. This means Web 2.0 features like RSS can only be obtained through a different browser - typically FireFox)

Owing to legal strategy, Microsoft can not provide what has become basic functionallity to users of its code. Basic functionallity like conversion of database tables to Excel and controls used by its browser. Its software design by legal strategy and it is bad software design that can only be made less bad with deals like the Novell/Microsoft one made on November 2 2006 - by I now see Ray Ozzie (may his name mean savior to all) The Novell/ Microsoft deal gives Microsoft customers what they need - like Open Office, Adobe, Excel conversion, FireFox.

Perhaps the entire Office Live thing is legal strategy. Lets see some articles that allow conclusions regarding why Office Live. Is it really consumer benefit? Or is it really legal strategy involving patents and the paying for use of those. Perhaps it is a bit of both.

And if you use GPL code  No_Ax_to_Grind | 11/29/06
Again, BACK ON TOPIC, Microsoft needs to keep the gravy train a runnin'.  DonnieBoy | 11/29/06
It is you that is off topic.  No_Ax_to_Grind | 11/29/06

What part of FREE and OPEN do you not understand. There is no reason to put  DonnieBoy | 11/29/06
What part don't you understand???  No_Ax_to_Grind | 11/29/06
So why all this fear of GPLed code??? As you say, the programers will  DonnieBoy | 11/29/06

So your saying open source folks can't code?  No_Ax_to_Grind | 11/29/06
We are talking Microsofts converter, it will be castrated. Yes, if MS  DonnieBoy | 11/29/06
MS is NOT providing it...  No_Ax_to_Grind | 11/29/06
Right, Microsoft the angel, they want everything to interoperate, they get  DonnieBoy | 11/29/06

You mean the license which deliberately excludes GPL?  whisperycat | 11/29/06
180 degrees backwards. It's the GPL  No_Ax_to_Grind | 11/29/06
If it was a FREE and OPEN standard, there would be no problem.  DonnieBoy | 11/29/06
The GPL is NOT Free or Open.  No_Ax_to_Grind | 11/29/06
The GPL is designed to guarantee freedom. But, you also are free to not use  DonnieBoy | 11/29/06
Free? Only as long as you bow to Stallman's view.  No_Ax_to_Grind | 11/29/06
Right inocent Microsoft, their license just HAPPENS to be incompatible with  DonnieBoy | 11/29/06
GPL is NOT free, nor open  John Zern | 11/29/06
People are free to use GPL or not use it, but it is all about freedom and  DonnieBoy | 11/29/06
Another thing, the ODF standard has nothing to do with GPL license.  DonnieBoy | 12/01/06
