Developers Will Build to ODF
After the Novell/Microsoft marriage, it became known that developers should be coding to Open Office or one of its close relatives. End Users might never touch Open Office but rather use what ever they are comfortable with.

It is rare for an organization to dictate what kind of pen is used for writing and while the organization may supply pens and other office supplies, the employee is usually allowed to bring his/her own writing implements to the office. The same should and eventually will be true with word processing software. Microsoft's Office Live probably addresses this notion.

Say you work for a branch of the US government that still uses Word Perfect. These agencies are often comprised of legals because during the Clinton Reno administration the Department of Justice required that documents be submitted in Word Perfect or Adobe. But you are hiring folks that only know what they used in college. That today would be Word. But more and more it is Open Office.

Word Perfect use to be Novell. Novell now bundles Open Office. The Microsoft/Novell merger means Open office is like SOAP - a common standard that can be relied on for the next decade of development work.

If you are just a word smith. Then there is no training required. Stick with what is known. However if you are more than that. IE you are someone charged with improving organizational efficiency and effectiveness, then your training plan is clear. Its time to learn Open Office and Open Document Format.

Yes, Microsoft wants you to think there is not solution but to let them  DonnieBoy | 11/29/06
So now you think MS "controls" open source  No_Ax_to_Grind | 11/29/06
Just comenting on the reality of MS proprietary XML. It is designed to  DonnieBoy | 11/29/06
What MS does, or doesn't do has NOTHING  No_Ax_to_Grind | 11/29/06
Still, Microsoft is motivated to use their proprietary standard to  DonnieBoy | 11/29/06
Once more, that has NOTHING to do with ODF open source  No_Ax_to_Grind | 11/29/06
Back on topic, Microsoft needs to keep the gravy train a runnin' we are  DonnieBoy | 11/29/06

You explain why Microsoft will have to be dragged kicking and screaming  DonnieBoy | 11/29/06
Buwahahahaha  No_Ax_to_Grind | 11/29/06
Back on topic, if you use MS proprietary XML, you are letting MS lead you  DonnieBoy | 11/29/06
And if you use GPL code  No_Ax_to_Grind | 11/29/06
Again, BACK ON TOPIC, Microsoft needs to keep the gravy train a runnin'.  DonnieBoy | 11/29/06
It is you that is off topic.  No_Ax_to_Grind | 11/29/06

Common sense would be Microsoft droping their proprietary XML and  DonnieBoy | 11/29/06
MicroSuSE already supports ODF.  Scrat | 11/29/06
They do not give it full support, this is a third party, and not included  DonnieBoy | 11/29/06

ANYONE can implement it...  No_Ax_to_Grind | 11/29/06
What part of FREE and OPEN do you not understand. There is no reason to put  DonnieBoy | 11/29/06
What part don't you understand???  No_Ax_to_Grind | 11/29/06
So why all this fear of GPLed code??? As you say, the programers will  DonnieBoy | 11/29/06
dont use gpl in that case  galileon | 11/29/06
OpenOffice is GPL. Customers want interoperability. Microsoft wants to  DonnieBoy | 11/29/06
I agree, no developer should  No_Ax_to_Grind | 11/29/06
Clearly...  zkiwi | 11/29/06

So your saying open source folks can't code?  No_Ax_to_Grind | 11/29/06
We are talking Microsofts converter, it will be castrated. Yes, if MS  DonnieBoy | 11/29/06
MS is NOT providing it...  No_Ax_to_Grind | 11/29/06
Right, Microsoft the angel, they want everything to interoperate, they get  DonnieBoy | 11/29/06

Right, Microsoft wants you to think that they had NOTHING to do with any  DonnieBoy | 11/29/06
You mean the license which deliberately excludes GPL?  whisperycat | 11/29/06
180 degrees backwards. It's the GPL  No_Ax_to_Grind | 11/29/06
If it was a FREE and OPEN standard, there would be no problem.  DonnieBoy | 11/29/06
The GPL is NOT Free or Open.  No_Ax_to_Grind | 11/29/06
The GPL is designed to guarantee freedom. But, you also are free to not use  DonnieBoy | 11/29/06
Free? Only as long as you bow to Stallman's view.  No_Ax_to_Grind | 11/29/06
