Developers Will Build to ODF
After the Novell/Microsoft marriage, it became known that developers should be coding to Open Office or one of its close relatives. End Users might never touch Open Office but rather use what ever they are comfortable with.

It is rare for an organization to dictate what kind of pen is used for writing and while the organization may supply pens and other office supplies, the employee is usually allowed to bring his/her own writing implements to the office. The same should and eventually will be true with word processing software. Microsoft's Office Live probably addresses this notion.

Say you work for a branch of the US government that still uses Word Perfect. These agencies are often comprised of legals because during the Clinton Reno administration the Department of Justice required that documents be submitted in Word Perfect or Adobe. But you are hiring folks that only know what they used in college. That today would be Word. But more and more it is Open Office.

Word Perfect use to be Novell. Novell now bundles Open Office. The Microsoft/Novell merger means Open office is like SOAP - a common standard that can be relied on for the next decade of development work.

If you are just a word smith. Then there is no training required. Stick with what is known. However if you are more than that. IE you are someone charged with improving organizational efficiency and effectiveness, then your training plan is clear. Its time to learn Open Office and Open Document Format.
