Really depends...
On if the new features are useful. Take Office for example, Microsoft has added new feature after new feature with every release and few use the functionality that Office 97 had let alone the functionality that the latest office has.

So take Linux for example. It does the job and does it well. Developers never ride for free be it writing for Windows or for Linux the work still has to be done. If it's too expensive the Microsoft way someone will get Linux to do it. There's more than one way to skin a cat you know as the saying goes. So if Micosoft holds patent X for doing a certain thing a certain way then Linux can do it another way to get the equivalent functionality.

Do realize as well patented software can be licensed under the GPL. Now would that be kicker if you found you infringed on a patent licensed under the GPL? Anyone could take what you innovated and do the same thing. Remember innovation is not invention as it is finding a use for the invention. So this could get very interesting.
