Not quite right
IBM made a mistake in figuring the whole PC concept was purely for hobbiest. When Apple came out with thier Apple and Apple II that was a wake up call to IBM. Now IBM was too far behind to create thier own closed architecture and didn't have the time to spend developing something like so they took a chance and bought the parts off the shelf tying it all together with the BIOS chip figuring no one would reverse engineer that chip like compaq did. Now if IBM could had the PC a closed system they would have but they couldn't. It was until years later that they tried to close the system and very few bought into the idea of the PS/2 MCA pc running OS/2 and the plan for the closed system failed.
