2002 was after the settlement right?
http://www.information-age.com/article/2002/august/dell_risks_wrath_of_microsoft_to_sell_os-free_pcs
Dell's scheme is a clever re-reading of the new agreement that neatly avoids the dreaded 'L' word.

Why was Dell trying to work around the license agreement in the first place?

What part of this is untrue and unclear?

But as of 1 August 2002, MS's licensing terms for its hardware partners have stipulated that no PC should ship without an operating system

If not Dell, list a few others (including yours) and I will call and see if they will sell me a computer without Windows. You don' t have to name your exact company, I understand that part, but give me some names so that in the course of it, I will call your PC company and fail miserably to be able to purchase a desktop system without "XP recommended". Why would a large computer manufacturer refuse a sale rather than sell it without Windows if there wasn't a golden handcuff or intimidation?

As far as my tale, that's the perk of the way companies work now. You don't have to move up management to move up the seniority scale. I telecommute 100%, I only use Linux, I got approval to use the Linux VPN client, and I got my current Dell laptop without XP or 2K and happily running PCLinuxOS. Do I care if you believe me, not at all.

TripleII

P.S. Did you call Dell and try, did you succeed? Give me the number you called, I'll call and confirm tonight.
