Thank you for your comment: No I am not for a moment saying that we shouldn't be using databases until we get a truely relational database. What we already have is a huge step forward from using flat files or a hierarchical database (yes, even MySQL :-)!)

I worked for many years without understanding the theory and I think I have become a lot more effective as a practitioner since I took the trouble to get my head into it. At the very least it is something to learn that has long term use, unlike learning about specific products where the knowledge seems all too transient. Also it is damn interesting stuff and leads on into a lot of fascinating areas that I was previously unaware of.

However, I am also persuaded that we could get much nearer to the ideal, that this is a practical goal and has real benefits. In some ways IBM pushed SQL on the world when it was still half baked and we have been digesting the consequences ever since. The main vendors are understandably nervous about moving away from an established standard and also seem to be continually distracted by marketing ploys that seem to take them far away from their core products.

In a way this means it could be an open field for open source.

Sometimes I wonder if I should have go myself but I do recognise that this task, while I believe it to be possible, is by no means trivial! Then there is the troublesome business of having to work for a living. Also really I am an application programmer and I don't really want to stop using my hard acquired business knowledge. However I want this thing because I firmly believe it could improve the productivity and quality of my work. Back in the olden days I used a database and programming language that was strongly orientated toward declarative contraints and metadata from the database and I must say it is still way ahead of anything I use today in terms of productivity and reliability.
