1. Distinct isn't good enough, if you generate duplicates your system is by definition not relational, a table or result with duplicates in is not a relation. Also the performance implications of duplicates are fairly disasterous.

2. I am using theory here in its scientific sense not in its popular sense as you use it here. Currently to emulate this behaviour you have to use all sorts of work rounds in SQL, the optimiser should be doing this work for you. It isn't a matter of processor speed or memory it is about implementing a relational database properly. If you don't understand the theory then you end up having to buy and try out products when you could know just from reading the product descriptions that they are not up to scratch, MySQL being a case in point.

3. The whole point of the relational model is that the programmer or user only deals with the logical model. The problem with current systems is that there is a pretty much direct mapping between the logical and physical level. MySQL's lack of views make it much less capable in this respect even than other SQL products.

I still recommend that you read up on the theory, both from the point of view that it is interesting in itself and also because it has enormous practical implications. The relational database is one of the key products of computing and it is certainly not yet delivering its full potential, precisely because the products we currently have aren't meeting the specification of a truly relational database.
